When I first came to Animas, I figured that I can continue the workflow that I was proud of in Bayfield. Which I ended up doing, completing homework and finishing in class assignments on time. I am fond of learning subjects that were not included into the state wide curricular, taking psychology and enjoying time with teachers that build upon what is always featured in a book. Which leads me to Dan’s spreadsheet workshop for the sophomore math course, which helped me gain the knowledge to use any spreadsheet program and generate the answers to complex equations. The workshop is based on using lines of code to generate answers from formulas which would normally take up time by writing down each step from a graphing calculator. I am glad that Dan made his own subject to teach within the curricular, as it is knowledge that I can use down the line with tax deduction and earned wages.
Following the trend of useful subjects taught in standardized courses, I am grateful for Shane’s way of teaching (which reminds me of teachers back in Bayfield). Within Shane’s humanities class I was able to become a part of many great projects, which include the filming of Siddhartha and the sophomore humanities exhibition. Within my first week at Animas, I was quickly put into a group to help create a piece of work that can be shown to an audience. For the first time in my education, I was able to have a say in what I would like to do to contribute in a large group. As I did not get the chance to do so while at Bayfield, where positions were cherry picked by leading representatives only. I chose to be a cameraman, knowing that it was one of the few things I would be able to do well, to some degree. I felt satisfied with my ability to contribute to the group, as well as the class. After a couple of weeks, the announcement of the class’s exhibition was in the air and within days I was assigned to a substantial part. The job was to construct a bridge that could be crossed and be a part of the stage of the hero’s journey, “crossing the threshold”. I gathered wood that was piled up in the back of the school and took it to the “makers space” which would be used to build the bridge. Within the next day, I was restricted access to use power tools (since I was a new student), so I had to find an alternative. A colleague was then assigned to build the bridge and I was able to oversee the construction of the rooms inside the exhibition. Even though I was not able to help build the bridge, I felt that I atleast did help contribute to the exhibition by transporting supplies.
Along comes a problem that I have had since the beginning of my education, studying daily for subjects. I occasionally procrastinate towards the review material that I receive within standardized curricular classes that I attend. I have trouble with procrastination as it makes me not want to create dedicated time for studying subjects, since the only times I study are the days prior to taking a test. Even though I recognize my fault at not regularly studying, I get reminded to study, which only makes me want to engage in other things instead. While I have the completed worksheets and vocabulary lists that are graded, I still refuse to review the material. Within the next semester, I am going to create time needed for me to study daily so I can improve on my knowledge, in Spanish for an example. After doing so, I will be able to see the results of my change on paper.
With the areas that I need to improve on, there is one thing I get asked too many times, the act of being unsociable. I have to say, it is by my choice to not reach out to others, as it was cause of many inconveniences that I had to deal with in the past. What I have trouble in, is telling people that whenever I am spoken to, I will respond. Now, having said that does not mean that I will try to be social from now on, seeing that it is a process of itself that I have been testing while volunteering. This is an area that has been under development and will continue to in the future as it is a part of who I am as a person.
Will I need to take part in the LINK internship even if I already have a job? I asking this question since I am already volunteering at the future job site that I would like to work at, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Having volunteered for quite a while at the site and I have gained recognition for my work ethic and positive attitude of the overall job. While this might be nothing to bid on, I have a feeling that I would be able to get a paid position within the railroad before the beginning of junior year.
